You know what?
Smoothstack’s coding challenges are scored on a scale of 1-10 for different types of challenges:
- Front-end,
- Back-end, and
- SQL/GraphQL/MongoDB
- Algorithms
Test cases within each challenge validate if the candidate’s code produces expected outputs, with each test case worth 1/2 to 1 point.
Completion time for algorithm challenges also affects scores, with candidates solving within expected time ranges (e.g., 30 minutes) receiving full points, gradually decreasing for longer durations.
The coding challenge encompasses a mix of coding tasks and multiple-choice questions, all completed within a strict 2-hour time limit.
This structure ensures a thorough evaluation of candidates’ abilities across various coding domains within a reasonable timeframe.

What Reddit Forum Talk About Smoothstack Coding Challenge?
Thewal is a person who shared his real incident about “smooth stack coding challenges” and how he tackled all these things.
If you’re still searching, I wanted to share my experience with the Smoothstack hiring process. First, there’s a coding challenge on HackerRank.
It’s a mix of coding tasks and multiple-choice questions, and you have 2 hours to complete it.
If you pass the coding challenge, you’re invited to a webinar. Here’s what I learned:
You’ll have a tech interview where you need to show a project you’ve worked on. After that, there’s a 2-week evaluation period followed by 3 to 4 months of training.
During training, you’re paid a minimum wage based on the state you’re in, which can range from $4500 to $10,000 in total. Benefits kick in after 2 months, but there’s a penalty fee if you don’t complete the program.
You’re required to commit to 2 years as a Smoothstack employee. If you quit before that, there’s a penalty fee, though they don’t specify the amount. Also, you can’t choose which company you’ll work for, but they’re all Fortune 500 companies.
In the first year, you’ll make $60,000, and in the second year, it goes up to $70,000. If you stay on after the 2 years, you could earn over $90,000.
You might have to relocate, as remote work is rare. Most likely, it’ll be around the DC area. They offer some relocation assistance and adjustments for the cost of living.
Time off isn’t guaranteed, and you only get federal holidays and what’s required by state law.
So, if you’re new to coding and don’t mind these terms, it might be a good opportunity. But personally, it’s not for me.
Final Word
Smoothstack coding challenges are a big part of their hiring process. They use both coding problems and multiple-choice questions to see how well candidates can solve problems.
The challenges last for 2 hours, and candidates are scored based on both their answers and how quickly they finish.
These challenges are important for Smoothstack to find the best candidates for their team. While it can be stressful, it’s also a chance for candidates to show what they can do.
Overall, Smoothstack wants people who are good at solving problems and can handle challenges.
