Gun Insurance - Amended Bill Introduced to Senate

An amended bill was introduced last week by two California senators that would require gun owners in the state to obtain liability insurance for their firearms.

Introduced and amended by Senators Nancy Skinner, D-Oakland, and Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas Senate Bill 8 The proposal follows a spate of shootings across California last month.

“Victims of gun violence and their families suffer severe harm — economic, psychological and physical — but there is no way to compensate for that harm,” Skinner said in a statement.

Skinner said insurance is a method society uses to compensate victims of accidents such as car accidents, medical malpractice and faulty consumer products.

“Requiring gun owners to carry liability insurance puts a burden on the gun owner,” the senator said.

“This bill is a general approach to improving Social Security,” Blakespear said. “Under current laws, victims of gun violence and society as a whole suffer from gun violence. This must change.”

Bay City News Service (via Napa Valley Register) If SB 8 becomes law, California will become the first US state to enact a gun liability insurance requirement. It’s also worth noting that SB 8 is modeled after similar legislation passed in San Jose, CA. Although San Jose’s gun insurance law has had some pushback from gun rights movements, it It also surprisingly saw opposition from taxpayer organizationsThe law requires gun owners to pay a fee to a private nonprofit organization.
