STOCKHOLM (AP) — Four chimpanzees escaped from a Swedish zoo and roamed free before being captured and euthanized Wednesday, Swedish media reported.
Annika Troselius, spokeswoman for the group that runs Furuvik Zoo, told the Expressen newspaper that all the animals had to be euthanized because they were not comfortable enough.
He said chimpanzees are strong and dangerous animals, and the zoo’s main focus is “no human being gets hurt”.
Troselius told Swedish Radio that a fifth chimpanzee is believed to have escaped its enclosure, although there were no other immediate details.
It is unclear how the mammals managed to escape their enclosure.
